2008 Global Day of Prayer Report
This year the organizing group felt the call to go to the city's high places and so arranged for a '7 Hills' prayer event to take place on the 11th May. Each of the seven hills fell within the city's boundary and between them covered a large geographic spread. Ahead of time, as we prayed, the organizing group felt like each of the hills represented a large tent peg, above which a canopy of prayer would form covering the city.
On the day groups gathered on the various hills across the city and in total around 400 people assembled to pray. Each group had agreed to pray the prayer for the world at exactly 3pm and also had a specific prayer to read aloud over our city and nation. Individual themes were taken by each group, covering the '7 mountains (or moulders) of society' i.e. Religion (Church), Business, Education, Government and politics, Media, Arts, entertainment and sports and Family. On each hill time was given to informal praying for their specific theme.
Sung and spoken worship was interwoven throughout the event and all the groups sung Psalm 127 over the city in closing "Unless the Lord builds the house...."
Every group reported back positively, with most people commenting on how they would like to do this sort of thing more often. Many churches and groups of Christians met, planned and prayed together for the first time. The long term fruit in terms of unity and working together is yet to be seen, but appears to be more likely in the light of this Global Day of Prayer Event.
